Stainless Steel Used for Many Mining Applications

The mining industry has plenty of use for our custom design stainless steel installation services. As one of the larger stainless steel fabricators in Perth, we have the resources to undertake and complete large projects far away from our home base when necessary.

Stainless Steel Used for Many Mining Applications

Why the Mining Industry Needs Stainless Steel

Stainless steel has a lot of characteristics that make it perfect for the mining industry. It is easily fabricated. It is inexpensive and light compared with other metals of similar strength. It is corrosion-resistant, meaning it doesn’t rust. It is also very durable and easy to clean. It is also the most sustainable of alloys or fabricated metals. This makes it perfect for an industry such as mining.

Some Typical Uses for Stainless Steel by the Mining Industry

Stainless steel is versatile and can be used for a lot of different applications. It is used for mining screens, fluidised bed boilers, pumps, heat exchangers, vessels, pipes, tanks, structural components and cathode plates. Stainless steel also makes great workbenches.

Stainless steel is known for being easy to clean because of its smooth, hard surface. That also makes it perfect for any application where any substances need to be stored without the possibility of contamination.

For those who are staying in a mining camp, the kitchen in the “mess hall” will usually have a lot of stainless steel equipment, such as utensils, tables, benches, pots, pans, sinks, steam tables and the ventilation hood over frying or grilling equipment.

Tips for Designing Your Stainless Steel Kitchen Canopy

We perform a lot of custom design stainless steel installation jobs in the Perth area. One of our most common is a stainless steel kitchen canopy. Kitchen canopies are made of stainless steel because it is one of the few materials that is compliant with Australian Standard 1668.2-2012.

According to the standard, the material used to construct a commercial kitchen canopy must be “manufactured of rigid, impervious, hard faced, non-combustible material such as steel or stainless steel…”

Benefits of Stainless Steel in Kitchens

Stainless steel possesses a combination of hardness and workability that is non-existent in any material that doesn’t cost hundreds of times as much as stainless steel. The hardness and non-porous nature of stainless steel makes it easy to clean. This is extremely important for a canopy that will have smoke from various oils baked into it on a daily basis.

Stainless steel is also resistant to corrosion and nearly impervious to damage from vermin. When stainless steel is kept clean, it gives off a sparkle that adds to the aesthetics of any kitchen.

Size Matters

Your exhaust opening needs to be large enough to catch all of the exhaust coming from any gas appliance such as an oven or a fryer. However, the exhaust must be designed in a manner that no condensation falls onto appliances through exhaust openings. The openings must be within 500 mm of the exhaust plenum extremities at a minimum width of 75 mm to allow access for cleaning.

When the exhaust hood is attached to a wall, the wall must form part of the hood. The base of the hood must be equipped with a condensation gutter that is at least 25 mm deep and 50 mm wide. The gutter must have drainage holes with a diameter of 25 mm, with removable screw caps.

Reasons Why Industrial Trades Use Stainless Steel Workbenches

We have completed many custom design stainless steel installation projects in the Perth area. While many are for the medical and hospitality industries, we also install a lot of stainless steel workbenches for industrial trade applications. There are four key reasons why the industrial trades use stainless steel workbenches.

Why Industrial Trades Use Stainless Steel Workbenches

Corrosion Resistance

Stainless steel, by definition, contains at least 10.5% chromium. This makes stainless steel highly resistant to corrosion. The chromium reacts with the other elements to form an oxide film on the surface. This film is so thin that it is invisible to the naked eye, but it adheres firmly to the metal and protects it from a wide range of corrosive agents. The film actually utilises oxygen to repair itself when degraded, allowing for easy repair of damage from abrasion, scratching or cutting.

A low-alloyed grade of stainless steel will resist atmospheric corrosion, while higher-alloyed grades provide more protection against corrosive chemicals, whether they be acid, alkaline or chlorine-based.

Resistance to High and Low Temperatures

Stainless steel is generally resistant to standard extremes in temperatures. However, certain grades afford more protection against extreme heat while others provide protection against extreme cold.

Because stainless steel is so innately strong, it is often used in design to lower costs. Stainless steel doesn’t need to be as thick as other metals. This reduces overall weight while also reducing costs compared to other materials. Some stainless steel grades can be heat-treated for extreme strength.

Cleanliness and Hygiene

Stainless steel is the most sanitary and easy to clean of all materials that one can reasonably use in the industrial trades. It is comparable to titanium but at a fraction of the cost. The main reasons are the aforementioned film that covers the surface and the fact that stainless steel is very hard and non-porous.

No Surprises: Why You Need a Custom Stainless Steel Fit Out

If you have a restaurant or pub in need of equipment such as appliances, tables, benches and shelves, you can choose to have custom design stainless steel installation or you can buy “stock” equipment already manufactured and try to fit it into your kitchen. We always recommend having the custom fit out because it is the only way to truly turn your kitchen into your own.

Why You Need a Custom Stainless Steel Fit Out

Ironically enough, many restaurant and pub owners think that it is “too much hassle” to have a custom fit out, when the reality is that the custom fit out saves a lot of time and hassle in the long run.

When we come out to your restaurant to give you an estimate, we work with you to determine exactly what you require, from your custom made oven canopy to benches to prep tables to shelves. This allows you 100% creative control over your kitchen. You don’t have to settle for somebody else’s idea of the right size for a prep table. You determine exactly how large you want your ventilation hood to be.

No two kitchen operations are ever alike. When buying standard tables, you are at the mercy of what manufacturers believe the average restaurant needs to operate efficiently. In other words, a fast food restaurant will end up with the same equipment as a gourmet restaurant.

At Western Stainless, we will provide an onsite consultation using your feedback and your vision to determine a custom solution according to your specifications and requirements. Whether it’s a kitchen or a bar, we help you maximise every square mm of space so that your equipment is an asset to your business instead of a problem.
